Common Causes of Neck & Upper Back Pain in Rydalmere & Nearby Suburbs

Neck and upper back pain are two of the most common issues we see in our Rydalmere physiotherapy clinic, and if you live or work in nearby Parramatta, Ermington, West Ryde, Dundas or Silverwater, you probably know someone who has struggled with it too.

Busy office work, long commutes, strength training, weekend sports, and even day-to-day stress all contribute to why neck pain is so prevalent across Sydney’s central suburbs.

Here’s a breakdown of the most common causes we see locally and why they happen.

1. Poor Desk Posture (especially in office-heavy regions like Parramatta & West Ryde)

A huge portion of our patients work long hours at a computer – especially those commuting into Parramatta CBD or working from home around Rydalmere, Dundas or Melrose Park.

Typical desk-related contributors include:

  • Forward head posture

  • Rounded shoulders

  • Low monitor height

  • Sitting for long stretches without movement

  • Tight neck flexors and upper traps

This posture puts constant load through the neck joints and upper back muscles, leading to tightness, stiffness and headaches.

2. Muscle Tension & Stress

Areas around Rydalmere and Parramatta have a high population of professionals who experience:

  • High stress

  • Long work hours

  • Poor sleep

  • Limited physical activity during the day

Stress often manifests physically as upper trapezius and levator scapulae tension, causing neck stiffness, shoulder tightness and restricted movement.

3. Gym & Strength Training Flare-Ups

We treat a lot of athletes and active adults who train at local gyms in Rydalmere, Parramatta and West Ryde.

Neck and upper back pain often flare due to:

  • Overloading pressing movements

  • Poor technique during overhead lifts

  • Weak scapular stabilisers

  • Upper back mobility restrictions

  • Sudden increases in training volume

When not addressed early, these can lead to persistent pain or recurring niggles.

4. Phone & Device Use (“Text Neck”)

It’s normal to spend hours on smartphones, but holding your head forward increases load on your neck by up to 3–4x.

This is extremely common in teens and young adults across local schools and universities.
We also see it often in parents who spend a lot of time on their devices in the evenings.

5. Driving & Commuting

Residents commuting between Rydalmere, Parramatta, Silverwater or Eastwood often experience stiffness from:

  • Prolonged sitting

  • Poor seat setup

  • Leaning forward while driving

  • Shoulder tension while gripping the steering wheel

Small ergonomic changes can make a significant difference.

6. Sports Injuries (especially in throwing, contact, or rotational sports)

Weekend athletes in areas like Ermington, Dundas Valley and Oatlands commonly experience neck & upper back irritations from:

  • Rugby or soccer contact

  • Poor tackle technique

  • Rotational overload in tennis or cricket

  • Sudden changes in load

  • High-intensity training without adequate warm-up

These injuries usually require a combination of manual therapy and strengthening to settle.

7. Age-Related Changes

While this isn’t always the primary driver, adults aged 40+ often experience:

  • Degenerative changes in cervical discs

  • Facet joint stiffness

  • Muscle imbalance

  • Loss of thoracic mobility

These factors can make the neck more sensitive to posture, activity changes or stress.
