Taping and Bracing for BJJ Athletes: Support, Recovery & Performance

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a physically demanding sport. Between joint locks, takedowns, and scrambles, your body is exposed to stress in almost every position. Whether you’re dealing with a niggling injury or trying to prevent one, taping and bracing can offer targeted support – without keeping you off the mats.

At Recovery Physiotherapy in Rydalmere, we work with BJJ athletes from Ermington, Silverwater, Dundas, and Parramatta, helping them stay active and protected with customised physio-led support strategies, including bracing and taping options.

When Should You Use Tape or a Brace for BJJ?

Not every injury needs support – but some can benefit greatly from it. You might benefit from taping or bracing if you:

  • Have a joint sprain or ligament strain

  • Are recovering from a previous injury and want extra confidence on the mats

  • Need support during competition or high-volume training

  • Experience instability, such as ankles rolling easily or knees feeling “wobbly”

  • Want to reduce load through an overworked joint or muscle

Important: Support strategies should never replace rehab. They’re one part of a broader injury prevention and recovery plan.

Common BJJ Injuries That Benefit from Support

Fingers & Thumbs (Grips)

BJJ grip fighting puts huge stress on your small hand joints. Finger taping can:

  • Reduce strain on the ligaments and pulleys

  • Prevent hyperextension

  • Help manage joint swelling or pain

Support Tip: We often show athletes how to buddy tape or spiral wrap fingers for gi training – especially for guards like spider or lasso.

Ankles

Frequent in wrestle-ups, scrambles, and takedowns. Bracing or rigid taping can:

  • Prevent excessive inversion/eversion

  • Provide stability post-sprain

  • Reduce re-injury risk during competition

Knees

Knees take a lot of torque in leg entanglements, takedowns, and guard passing. Bracing may help:

  • Offload pressure on recovering ligaments (ACL, MCL, meniscus)

  • Improve proprioception

  • Allow controlled return to live rolling

We always pair knee support with targeted strength training to address the root cause.

Shoulders & Elbows

Armbars, kimuras, and shoulder pressure are unforgiving. Taping can:

  • Offload strained tendons or ligaments

  • Reduce risk of overextension

  • Encourage better posture and mechanics

A BJJ-specific shoulder screen can help you decide whether you need tape, load management, or both.

Types of Tape We Use in BJJ Physio Sessions

At Recovery Physio, we offer:

  • Rigid Sports Tape: Strong, structural support (common for ankles, fingers, knees)

  • Kinesiology Tape: Supports movement while aiding proprioception and circulation

  • Pre-Cut Taping Solutions: Great for high-volume training or competition prep

  • Custom Bracing Options: When needed, we guide you on selecting the right off-the-shelf or custom brace

Taping Isn’t a Long-Term Solution – Rehab Is Key

Taping gives you a window of opportunity – to move safely while rebuilding strength, mobility, and technique.

Our sports physios in Rydalmere will:

  • Assess your injury or concern

  • Apply tape/brace correctly

  • Teach you self-taping (if appropriate)

  • Build a full rehab plan to get you off tape and back to full strength

Please see our exercise rehabilitation services here for those who want a structured return to training.
