What is Women’s Health Physiotherapy?
Every stage of a woman’s life presents with unique health and physical challenges — and unique opportunities to feel stronger, more supported, and more empowered in your body. Our clinic in Rydalmere offers physiotherapy with a female therapist for women’s health concerns. Whether you’re preparing for the physical changes of pregnancy, recovering from childbirth, navigating the transition into menopause, or simply wanting to move better and feel better, we can help you.
Women’s health physiotherapy is a specialised area of physiotherapy that focuses on conditions and concerns specific to women across their lifespan. These include:
- Pregnancy-related pain including pelvic, back, hip, and knee pain
- Management of common pregnancy-related conditions such as urinary and bowel incontinence, carpal tunnel syndrome, varicose veins
- Postnatal recovery, including pelvic floor and abdominal muscle separation rehabilitation, return to exercise and/or sport
- Menopause-related changes such as joint stiffness, pelvic floor dysfunction, decreased muscle strength
- Exercise and movement support during pregnancy, after birth, and through perimenopause and menopause
Our women’s health physiotherapists can work with you to understand what your body needs and create a personalised treatment plan that supports your lifestyle, goals, and wellbeing.
A Lifespan Approach to Women’s Health
Women’s bodies change significantly through different life stages. That’s why our approach is holistic and tailored to you — not just your symptoms.
We work with women:
- During pregnancy, to support joint stability, manage pain, and prepare for birth
- After birth, to aid recovery, rebuild strength, and manage pelvic floor or abdominal concerns
- Through menopause, to help with bone health, mobility, bladder changes, and more
- At any time, when aches, pains, or questions about movement and function arise
Why see a physio for pregnancy, post-partum, or menopause related concerns?
Many women assume that issues like leaking when you sneeze, pelvic pain during pregnancy, or stiffness and weakness post-birth are things they simply have to “put up with.” The truth is, these symptoms are common but they’re not something you need to endure without support.
Working with a women’s health physio at Recovery Physiotherapy can help you:
-
- Relieve pain and discomfort including in your pelvis, back, or hips
- Strengthen your core pelvic floor
- Improve bladder and bowel control
- Feel confident moving again after pregnancy, surgery, or hormonal changes
- Understand your body’s changes and how to support them through all stages of life

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What can I expect at my first appointment?
Your first session will include:
- A detailed discussion of your symptoms, history, and goals
- Postural and movement assessment
- Pelvic floor muscle assessment
- Education about your condition
- A personalised plan including exercises, hands-on treatment, and self-care strategies
2. When should I see a women’s health physio?
You don’t have to wait for a problem to arise. It’s worth booking an appointment if you:
- Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- Are recovering from birth (vaginal or caesarean)
- Experience urinary or bowel leakage
- Feel pelvic heaviness or bulging
- Have pain during intercourse
- Are going through menopause
- Want to return to exercise safely
4. I’ve just had a baby — when should I book in?
We generally recommend a postnatal assessment around 6 weeks after delivery, but you can come in earlier if you’re experiencing pain, heaviness, incontinence, or other concerns. It’s never too early — or too late — to seek support.
5. I’m going through menopause. Can a physio really help with that?
Absolutely. Many women experience pelvic floor weakness, joint stiffness, and changes to bladder or bowel function during menopause. Physiotherapy can help with strength, mobility, and symptom management to improve your quality of life.
6. Will my health fund cover women’s health physio?
Most private health insurance policies that include physiotherapy will provide a rebate for women’s health services. Check your provider for your specific level of cover. We’re happy to provide itemised invoices for claiming.
7. I’m not sure if my symptoms are “normal” — should I still book in?
Yes! If something doesn’t feel right in your body — or you just want reassurance and education — a women’s health physio can help. Many issues are common, but that doesn’t mean you have to live with them. Early support can make a big difference.
